I was officiating a HS basketball game about 15 years ago when a bunch of kids started running around the arena's "upper" deck (it was the level where people came in, and for the main seating, they walked down stairs). Anyway, kids just hanging out at the arena that night got out of control (possible gang or gang wannabe related) and police and/or security started spraying. They must have used a LOT of pepper spray because fairly quickly, the arena filled up with that crap. We had to stop the game and move the players into the back hallway where the locker rooms were. The problem was, while the players and coaches went to their locker rooms (as did the officials to ours), the fans/parents that were in the stands and not involved in the melee came into the hallway as well. They actually got a bigger taste of the stuff than we did. Everyone was coughing, gagging, and looking for the nearest water source available. We called the game and I just grabbed my clothes and left, not bothering changing. Luckily, I'd had some experience touching my eyes after cutting up various jalapeño peppers (stupid at the time, but the experience proved beneficial as far as what to do and how to get some relief). NOT a fun night as the drive home was a nightmare -- for me and the others around me! I drenched myself and my car seat pouring bottled water all over my face and eyes every chance I got. After that I always kept at least half a dozen bottles of water in my car for every game. Mostly to drink, but you never know.

Everytime i see cops gloved up, and wiggling their fingers around in their gloved hands, I can't help but picture someone with their long sleeve shirt sleeves pushed up past their elbows and reaching into a dish pan that is filled up with soapy (elbow deep) water. Or, dropping backwards on a stretcher, with the smell of burning plastic floating around the air, as the ambulance is making a "buzzing" sound, while the back doors are opened and the stretcher is being rolled in, as the persons hands are at their sides. LOLOLOLOLOL!!
